Orla Dorgan Practice Nurse & Lactation Consultant
'Supporting Mums, Dads & their baby to breastfeed successfully’
A Lactation Consultation involves meeting with or chatting to a new mum, dad and their baby and sometimes, it is not always a first time mum. Second, third and subsequent mums can have a previously good breastfeeding experience with their first babies and now, this time around, may need support. There are sometimes mums, who have had tough breastfeeding journeys and this time around with their experience, reach out for support sooner, to avoid further problems.
I always say if breastfeeding is painful, reach out for support. Cuidiu, La Leche League and Friends of Breastfeeding and local Public Health Breastfeeding support groups have excellent Breastfeeding support networks and are a wealth of wisdom. Trust your gut, if it doesn’t feel right, you can ring me and I can chat to you and see if you need a consultation or can it be resolved over the phone.
Sometimes though, a problem may not be resolved and may need a longer consultation and you may prefer it in the privacy of your own home. This is where I can help.
What do I cover in a 1.5 hour Lactation Consultation? During the consultation, I’ll

Assess your breasts for any anatomical issues
Check your baby's anatomy (oral assessment) and sucking ability
Work with you to improve latching and positioning
Determine the likely reasons for the problems you are having
Provide tools and tips to help you breastfeed more easily
Work with you and your baby to come up with a plan that helps you reach your breastfeeding goals
Follow up phonecalls/emails/texts up to 2 weeks after consult
I’m always very aware mums can find it hard at this time, I was there too. My approach is gentle and I ensure you are happy with the plan before I leave. I don’t expect a tidy house, cups of tea - you need to rest and spend time with your baby. It's the one time, you can sit down, relax, enjoy your baby and let everyone else do everything else! Stay in your dressing gown or whatever is comfortable for you. I know what those first 6 weeks are like…you’re in a bubble and sometimes you can’t see the wood from the tree’s and that’s what I expect.
I follow up with you up to 2 weeks after the consultation. This is all included in your initial consultation fee. Receipts provided ( I am a member of ALCI, ILCA, NMBI, ) Some Health Insurance companies will reimburse for a Consultation. Check with your provider
Fee for the home consultation is €140 (this includes driving to the consultation. Journeys of up to 1 hour round trip included. Further travelling time will incur additional fee but I will let you know his before I visit you)
